Be Here

Senior Company performance
March 2023

Be Here was created through collaboration between nine members of our Senior Company, Artistic Director Isabella Stone and local Japanese/Australian dance maker and performer Risa Muramatsu Ray.

The work was developed through only nine rehearsals, a shorter creative process for DRILL, that explored the embodiment of Tasmanian landscapes known and important to the cast. Imagined landscapes are also an important theme in the work, allowing the performers to traverse the performance space that is literally here as well as those that they visualise. What has evolved is a seemingly simple structured improvisation. It was layered with the challenge of being together, being here in both stillness and movement, all in real responsive time. It was brave effort for young people at mixed stages of their dancing and performing practices.

The performers have been heavily involved in and directed the design process of costuming with parts of rehearsals spent hands on painting, tying and making.

We were fortunate enough to have time to work with esteemed musician and audio designer and maker Rachel Meyers live in the studio during the rehearsal process. Rachel was incredible at working with the young people’s ideas while also bringing her own personal responses to the theme, brining it to life through an exquisite 26 minutes of sound to hold and resonate with the chorus of young performers.

Presented in association with Ten Days on the Island, Be Here has been assisted through Arts Tasmania, the City of Hobart and by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
