DRILL’s 2019 Major Season: NEON

AUGUST 14TH - 17TH, 2019
BAYVIEW SECONDARY COLLEGE

In 2019 DRILL presented NEON, an immersive contemporary dance work by local young movers.

A collision of dance and science, NEON was a concoction of three new works inspired by the chemical elements, taking place during the International Year of the Periodic Table. Three choreographers, alongside the cast of seventeen, examined how our understanding of science and the physical makeup of our reality is reflected in human experiences.

NEON was a completely free-roaming experience featuring musical scores created by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and an explosive design of light and colour. Audiences were given the power to experiment with how they watch and listen to each of the three works, which were performed simultaneously on loop.

As a part of National Science Week, NEON also offered a range of fun, scientific experiments, games and competitions for audiences to try out prior to the performance.

Jaala Jensen is a Tasmanian born independent choreographer, dancer, and filmmaker, currently residing in Melbourne. She began performing and making in youth companies DRILL and Yellow Wheel, before graduating from The Space School of Performance Arts in 2015, with a Diploma of Dance (Elite Performance).

Since graduating, she has been involved with preprofessional collective, YW2, in which she choreographed a short work ‘Lavinia. Her Spoke. And I.’, and has since produced and choreographed two full-length works across 2016 and 2017, ‘Forgive Me Athena, I Chose the Beast’ and ‘Delia’s Idea’, and a collection of short works along the way.

In 2018 Jaala directed her focus to herself as a performer, and began developing a solo practice. She created two solo works, ‘Goddess Sophia’ as a part of the Moonah Moves Festival, Tasmania, and ‘Headless Reggae’ from her time as an Artist in Residence with Unity Space. She has recently performed in, ‘FRAGMENTAL’ by Chris Chua, ‘DYEL’ by Jacinta Martorella and Melbourne Fringe’s Best Dance Award recipient, ‘SONOS’ by Aimee Schollum.

She also collaborated with the Moonah Moves Festival as a mentor, running contemporary dance workshops and classes, and working closely with young Tasmanian artists to aid them in their own choreographic works.
