Schools Matinee tickets available to dissolving labels

DRILL invites teachers to book class groups to attend our schools matinee performances for dissolving labels.

dissolving labels looks at the themes of labels, how young people make sense of themselves and each other through pigeonholing or ‘labelling’. The project asks: What labels can I shed? What label do I keep? What labels have I been given? What do I see if I remove the lens of the label? The work has evolved to be honest and sensitive but also a rollercoaster of different stories, celebrations and rejections of our cast’s lived experiences of labels. This theme has led to some very raw, insightful and deep discussions amongst the group and leaders and hope that by sharing it with school’s audiences it may provide a platform for bigger discussions with your students.

The process has been led by a team of professionals from a diverse background of arts practices; DRILL Artistic Director Isabella Stone (dance), Davina Wright (theatre), Billie Rankin (visual arts) and Richie Cyngler (experimental sound). We encourage you to bring students interested in any type of performance, not only dance, as the work includes many aspects of performance.

WHEN: August 18th and 19th both at 11:30am followed by a Q&A with the cast.  Bookings are also available for the evening performances – please contact us for information.

Have you felt that someone has put a label on you that didn't fit? This performance asks: What labels can I shed? What labels do I keep? What do I see if I remove the lens of the label?

This talented group of young people (aged 13-25) have reflected their own experience of labels, to create a layered work of contemporary youth performance, featuring dance, singing, sound and theatre. dissolving labels has been created by the young people in collaboration with DRILL Artistic Director Isabella Stone (dance), Billie Rankin (visual arts/design), Davina Wright (theatre) and Richie Cyngler (experimental sound).

Dates: Monday 21 February  – Friday 11 March 2022
Cost: $136.36 plus GST ($150 inc GST) for a workshop of one hour or less, or $204.54 ($225 inc GST) for a 1.5 hour workshop.

Workshops will include warm up, and a movement phrase and choreographic task from the DRILL 2022 major season, dissolving labels, as well as a brief discussion about the upcoming work. If you do not have a dance class but have health, physical education, visual art or theatre students interested in trying movement, we encourage you to try a workshop. Please just let us know and we can adapt the workshop material to suit them.

Free workshop with Jenni Large

Photo of Jenni Large's development of Body Body Commodity - photo by Jade Ellis

DRILL is excited to be hosting a FREE three hour workshop with dance artist Jenni Large on Saturday 19th February, 1pm - 4pm. This workshop runs parallel to Jenni's second development of her new work Body Body Commodity currently taking place in Launceston. There is no need to register - just come along. Jenni is very kind, welcoming and an amazing artist full of skill and enquiry. We're sure it will be a great way to spend part of your Saturday, moving with others.

About the workshop:

Jenni’s classes focus on bringing ease, flow and grounding to the body through improvisation and integrate these theories using phrases of choreographed movement.
Her new work Body Body Commodity is concerned with the commodification of the female body in relation to consumerism and capitalism. A mass of foam objects act as the tools for exploring dynamics of ownership between object, subject and viewer. The workshop will involve exploring modes of engaging with the foam and each other.

Body Body Commodity is a commentary on our capitalist society and consumerist behaviour, where the value of material things is inextricably linked to the value we place upon women's bodies - a cultural conditioning ready for subversion, re-imagining and revolutionising.

Suitable for young adult (14+) and adult participants with prior movement experience, the workshop will entail a short warm up class and give insight into the creative processes explored in the work. Please bring a drink bottle, and a mask for breaks. For people under 18, please sign in initially with a guardian.

About Jenni:

Jenni is a contemporary dance artist collaborating, performing, choreographing, teaching and rehearsal directing on the lands of the palawa people in lutruwita/Tasmania. Grounded in her experiences and passion for working in regional settings, Jenni is driven by the personal and political potency of embodiment. Her practice locates the body as a site for transformation, play and connection.

Jenni has worked extensively across independent and company environments, regionally, nationally and internationally, notably, as a formative ensemble member and rehearsal director with Kyle Page & Amber Haines at Dancenorth from 2015-2020. Currently a creative associate at Tasdance, Jenni’s recent choreographic works premiered at Mona Foma and Ten Days On The Island.

Primary School Workshops for Term 4

To round out the year alongside Junior Classes and Senior Company's performance of Illuminate, AD Isabella Stone will be delivering 3 weeks of workshops in primary schools across Term 4 within nipaluna/Hobart to children grades 4 - 6.

DRILL loves sharing our belief in movement and creativity within school environments, reminding participants about the power of play inside of learning and encouraging them to feel good in their bodies and imaginations. This workshop series aims to keep DRILL connected to our school communities, feeds into our Dance Nexus program for Term 1 2022 and, brings some music, movement and fun to the end of the students' working year!!

Illuminate Begins

DRILL is honoured to have been invited to participate in Illuminate, a performance to celebrate Tasdance's 40th Anniversary in November. Sinsa Mansell, Emma Porteous and Adam Wheeler have brought together pakana kanaplila, Second Echo Ensemble, Stompin, DRILL and MADE with Tasdance to create a new site specific work in Launceston's Cataract Gorge.

DRILL's senior company have just finished a four day intensive and are embarking on weekly rehearsals for the next 6 weeks. The company are working with artist Bella Young and AD Isabella Stone to develop a short work responding to place and themes of connection, exchange, cycles, future and gift giving. The work will be layered and supported by costumes designed and made by Sabio Evans.

Earlier this year, we were privileged to participate in cultural awareness training delivered by Sinsa Mansell. This shared experience of information, knowledge, story and generosity has created a frame for the work to emerge from.

We're super excited for our road trip as a company and to be collaborating with companies across the state for the performances in Launceston.

This activity was assisted through Arts Tasmania and was made possible by the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund, which supports the arts in regional and remote Australia. We would also like to thank the Rotary Club of Hobart for their financial support.
